After seeing a couple questionable and pretty scary Newborn images floating around over the past week, I felt the need to address my concern. I’m going to start by saying that I know we all start somewhere and we are all, always learning. I personally did not have any idea how certain Newborn poses were comprised before I took on this venture, but I was going to figure it out before I attempted. The only way to figure this stuff out is to research a lot and practice a lot, not to mention taking workshops specific to your needs (whether online or in person) and so on.
It’s especially important to consider all safety measures when handling a family’s brand new baby. My opinion is that as a whole, most photographers have some creativity swirling around in their heads. Speaking for myself, it’s rare that there isn’t a new idea forming in my ever moving mind (I have sticky notes everywhere!). I don’t want to point any fingers, but if you’re going to have a baby suspended from anything, common sense really needs to come into play.
I’ve put together two of my own composites and have several to share from fellow photographers, showing the necessary steps to get to a pose that would be unsafe on it’s own, yet perfectly safe with assistance. Aside from putting the 2-4 images together, there is usually some cloning and painting involved, but it’s certainly worth the extra couple minutes. I would also like to recommend this PDF for both Parents and Newborn Photographers alike, it is certainly affordable at a minimum donation of 5.00 and all income from this PDF is donated to Shriners Children’s Hospital – Newborn Safety Bundle.
